As a host, you have many things to worry about when it comes to managing your vacation rental property. Not only do you have to keep your listing up to date and answer messages in a timely manner, you also have to keep up with the arrangement of your vacation rental unit. Of course, it’s obvious to clean and disinfect rooms and high-touch surfaces such as doorknobs and sinks. But there may be other important details that you are missing out on when it comes to cleaning. Every small detail makes a deep clean live up to hospitality standards. Let’s visit each room and discuss what small details you may be missing during your cleaning rounds.

Bathroom

Cleaning your shower grout can make your bathroom look completely brand new! Now, who wouldn’t want that? Make sure to wipe down the stains and disinfect the areas around the faucet as well. We always make sure to clean high-touch surface areas such as the faucet, but may forget to clean around it as well. Additionally, make sure there is enough hand soap for your guest, and leave extra toiletries just in case they need it. They will definitely appreciate that! Shower caddies are great for storing all shower belongings in one place, but they are a huge buildup of soap residue, mold, and other bacteria. Make sure that it’s clean and dry before hanging it up in your shower again. And don’t forget shower curtains, which should be replaced at least once every three months.

Kitchen

Always make sure all appliances are working properly. If you provide any general ingredients for your host, make sure they’re full as well. Microwaves need to be cleaned at least once a week, as caked on food particles can cause overheating and damage the microwave. Make sure the microwave turntable and oven racks are clean too. Dishwashers need to be cleaned also – if left unkempt, unwanted germs and messes will cycle back to your dishes. Countertops and other high-touch surfaces such as refrigerator handles need to be cleaned everyday.

Living Room

It’s easy to forget to check under and behind furniture. Check behind the furniture and in corners for any cobwebs or other clutter such as napkins or used candy wrappers that may have gotten swept out of view. Tiny things such as crumbs and coins can fall into the couch, so pull up the cushions and use a vacuum. Dust can make guests sick or cycle around to other parts of the house, creating dust bunnies. Remember to dust all areas, including the blinds and the top of ceiling fans. As always, disinfect high-touch surfaces such as electronics and remote controls.

Bedroom

It’s important to clean your bedding and bed sheets, but cleaning a mattress is just as important. Mattresses can be home to dust mites and unwanted critters, along with sweat and blood that can be mixed in. Simply vacuum the bare mattress and use a stain remover to spot-clean any stains. You can even scrub with baking soda for a deeper clean. Make sure you wash your pillows too – this can be done by tossing them in the washing machine. Mirrors collect dust, smudges, and streaks, which can lead to bacterial buildup. It’s also easy to forget to clean inside closets and dresser drawers. Make sure you do this at least once a year. This will remove any dust bunnies and can even help you clear your closet for new clothes!

Various

Of course, we all take out the trash bags. But did you know that trash cans must be cleaned regularly as well? Bacteria can grow in the trash cans, and odors from leaks and spills of food and drinks. You may not think of it, but washing machines need to be cleaned too. Luckily, this is an extremely easy appliance to clean. Just put two cups of cleaning vinegar into the detergent dispenser and run a cycle with the hottest water temperature. Once that is completed, run another cycle with one-half cup of baking soda. Make sure to toss in a couple old towels so that your washing machine isn’t running on empty. Afterwards, wipe the inside with a damp microfiber cloth. Washing machines do most of the cleaning by itself, giving you time to focus on other areas of your unit.
